Before it was an attraction, it was simply where Key West went fishing.
Sportfishing around Key West was already developing in the 1930s and 1940s. A City of Key West annual report records that Charter Boat Row at Garrison Bight began in 1949 with 36 boats. Generations of captains, mates and families have worked this stretch of waterfront ever since.
The boats changed, the electronics changed and fishing methods evolved—but the basic rhythm is familiar: crews prepare before sunrise, anglers arrive at the dock, and boats point toward the Atlantic, Gulf, reef and backcountry.
